Connors Toy Library started in 1973 with a pot of money donated from Lord Denis Connor, this money was used to set up a Toy Library in St. Marys Hospital for parents with children with Down Syndrome. It allowed them to come together to give one another support and borrow resources to support their child with development within their own homes. This service proved popular with the families and soon parents living in the North of the City requested the same. Having seen how good these groups were families wanted groups they could attend across the City with their children regardless of whether they had a disability or not. From here Community Toy Library sessions grew and parents ran the sessions voluntarily.
For areas where we were not able to run a session a mobile Toy Library visited regularly providing a stay, play and toy loan session.
We saw confident families attend but aware that hard to reach and vulnerable families wouldn't attend on their own, from here our outreach project developed. Door knocking, walking with and supporting families to attend their local Toy Library session.
